So when I get to planning a vacation that is going to be incredible, I go a little overboard on information gathering. So what better way to write my blog post for the day is to share the stuff I've learned.
Juneau is the only state capital that has no roads leading to it. You can only get there by boat or plane.
There are no penguins in Alaska.
There are few rental car places in Alaska. Of course when you don't have a lot of roads, you don't need a lot of rental cars.
There are only a limited number of ships that are allowed to go into Glacier Bay National Park. We chose one of those cruise lines! :)
The Iditarod Dog Race was initially done to bring vaccinations for children to prevent a diphtheria outbreak.
When a glacier breaks apart and falls into the water, that is called calving.
And so there is today's knowledge about Alaska.
We're planning a vacation to Alaska this summer. My husband has dreams of living there. I don't know about that but I can't wait to see it. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved my Alaskan vacation. We took Norwegian Cruise lines, and they were exceptional--you can do your own thing when you want. No structured eating. We went through Glacier Bay, it was so beautiful. Every port we--my daughter and I--either took a walking self guided tour, or a regular tour. It was a wonderful vacation.
ReplyDeleteOne more, from your good friend Sarah: reindeer and caribou are often on the menu. It's best to deflect questions about Rudolph at this time. ;)
ReplyDeleteenjoy every minute of planning! that's all part of the great fun! :)
You will love it! If you have time, take a day trip to Brooks Falls and see the bears up close and personal. That was the highlight of our trip.
ReplyDeleteI had a friend that lived in Wacilla. He was actually the deputy fire chief. They would literally drop him into a station via helicopter for 3 days at a time. Two guys, alone in the middle of the forest with no cel connection. Just internet.
ReplyDeleteWasn't pretty.
Now, the Northern lights, amazing!
